Every few years, networking hardware makers announce a new Wi-Fi standard, promising vastly higher speeds. In practice, though, what determines comfort in an office setting isn't peak throughput but the stability of the connection when many devices are online at once. We look at what Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 actually change, and when migration is worth it.

Wi-Fi 6 — Order in Dense Environments

Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) is a standard designed primarily for places where many devices use the network simultaneously — open-plan offices, conference rooms, waiting areas. The key mechanisms are OFDMA, which lets a single radio transmission serve several devices at once instead of queuing them one by one, and enhanced MU-MIMO, which improves communication in both directions. The standard also introduces Target Wake Time, which reduces power consumption for mobile and IoT devices, and mandatory support for WPA3. The Wi-Fi 6E variant additionally opens up the 6 GHz band — far less congested than 2.4 and 5 GHz, though with a shorter range.

What's New in Wi-Fi 7

Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) builds on the same foundation, adding channels up to 320 MHz wide and Multi-Link Operation (MLO), a technology that lets a device use several frequency bands simultaneously for a single connection. In practice this translates into lower latency and greater resilience to interference — traits that matter for video conferencing or real-time streaming, but matter less for everyday office work with documents and email.

Is It Worth Migrating Now

The decision to migrate should depend on actual needs, not simply on the availability of a newer standard on the market.

  • Number and density of devices — if a dozen or more laptops and phones connect simultaneously in a conference room, Wi-Fi 6 will meaningfully improve stability compared with older standards.
  • Client device compatibility — the benefits of a new standard only show up once most laptops and phones in the company support it; a handful of modern devices on an old network won't notice the difference.
  • Power and network infrastructure — newer access points often require a higher PoE budget and multi-gigabit switch ports, which can end up costing more than the access points themselves.
  • Nature of the work — companies that rely heavily on video conferencing and real-time collaboration will feel the benefits of Wi-Fi 7 sooner than offices with a typical, everyday network traffic profile.

Summary

Wi-Fi 6 is today a mature, proven standard that is more than sufficient for most offices and still serves as a sensible benchmark for network modernization. Wi-Fi 7 makes sense where every bit of latency improvement matters, or where the network needs to support an unusually large number of simultaneous devices. In either case, correct access point placement still has a bigger impact on connection quality than the standard printed on the box.
